The heat pump is a heating and cooling system based on the most sustainable principle of operation: instead of generating heat by consuming energy, it pumps (hence the name “pump”) the heat that already exists in the environment and transfers it to our space .
Air-to-water heat pumps are currently the most widely used heating and cooling medium in the world, with uses covering all sizes and types of buildings, whether for homes or large businesses.
How does the Heat Pump work?
The air-water heat pump takes the thermal energy that exists in the ambient air and brings it into our space, heating the indoor air, as well as the water the household uses.
Consumes minimal electricity and only during the heat pump phase. In fact, of the total heat produced, only 25% is attributed to the use of electricity. This means that 75% of the heat generated by heat pumps comes entirely from thermal energy pumped from the environment, ie from acompletely free, renewable and clean energy source. In this way, the heat pump manages to be the most economical heating system in existence.
8 important reasons to choose Heat Pumps
It is the most economical heating solution: according to the study of the National Technical University of Athens “Comparison of heating costs from different technologies”, heat pumps offer savings: 33% from pellets, 44% from closed energy fireplace, 38-45% from natural gas, 61% from oil and 71% from electric boilers.
They are subsidized by many public aid programs, as they are environmentally friendly, are classified in renewable energy sources and do not emit any pollutants.
They are connected to the existing hydraulic system of radiators and can easily replace any boiler, without the need for work inside the house.
They do not require a special boiler room or chimney.
They have the lowest maintenance costs compering to any complete heating-cooling system.
They offer very economical hot water for use while some pumps can be combined with an existing solar collector.
They work in heating and cooling even in the most extreme conditions.
The amortization of their initial investment is done immediately as the economy resulting from its use is extremely large.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
As part of its commitment to provide customers with solutions that use the right refrigerant for each application, Carrier has selected R-32 refrigerant to replace R-410A refrigerant, a high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant, in commercial chillers using scroll technology. R-32 was chosen for its lower environmental impact, high energy efficiency, wide availability and ease of use. In Europe, the refrigerant will be offered in some scroll chillers beginning in the first half of 2020. Introductions will follow in other regions and all will meet UN Montreal Protocol Kigali Amendment regulations taking effect in 2023. Carrier, a world leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), a leading global provider of innovative heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies.
“Carrier focuses the right refrigerant for each application in order to provide the very best solutions for our customers,” said Chris Nelson, President, HVAC, Carrier. “After thorough evaluation of the options, Carrier selected R-32 for scroll chillers and heat pumps for its lower impact on the environment, reaffirming our continued commitment to sustainability.”
Carrier’s use of R-32 refrigerant and expert system design will reduce the refrigerant carbon footprint by 80% in commercial scroll chillers and heat pumps. This is due to the much lower GWP and a significant system refrigerant charge reduction compared to the previous generation using R-410A.
Carrier is continuously investing in long-term solutions to lead the industry and promote highly efficient products with lower impact on global warming. This announcement follows Carrier’s 2018 selection of R-454B, known commercially as Puron Advance™, as its primary lower GWP solution to replace R-410A in ducted residential and package unitary commercial products utilizing scroll compressors sold in North America. Carrier also previously announced commitments to move toward low GWP refrigerants with the selection of HFO R-1234ze(E) for screw chillers in Europe in 2015, the introduction of R-513A in multiple centrifugal and screw chillers in 2018 and finally the introduction of the award winning AquaEdge® 19DV centrifugal chiller using HFO R-1233zd(E) in 2016.
About Carrier
Founded by the inventor of modern air conditioning, Carrier is a world leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions. Carrier experts provide sustainable solutions, integrating energy-efficient products, building controls and energy services for residential, commercial, retail, transport and food service customers. Carrier’s HVAC business is a part of Carrier Global Corporation, a leading global provider of innovative HVAC, refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies.
Carrier is committed to limiting the environmental impact of its products and solutions and reducing energy consumption. This commitment is in line with the targets of the European climate and energy package for 2020.
The energy efficiency improvement target strongly influences the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) market. Indeed buildings are the largest consumers of energy today and, of that consumption, HVAC systems account for considerably more than other equipment. Providing its customers with energy efficient solutions is therefore now a key sustainable development opportunity for the HVAC industry.
In order to achieve these objectives, the European Union has developed two regulations on equipment consumption, including lighting, IT, water heating and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning): Ecodesign (2009/125/EC) which establishes the framework for energy-using products and Energy Labelling (2010/30/EU) regulation for energy-related products sold in all 28 Member States.
Ecodesign regulation
Ecodesign is an approach to product design that encourages manufacturers to consider the environmental impact of the product over its entire lifecycle. In the European Union, the Ecodesign Directive establishes a framework for the setting of mandatory energy efficiency requirements for all energy-related products (ERPs), including heat pumps up to 400 kW. Because buildings have a thermal load depending on outdoor air temperature, the Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) is a new European parameter to evaluate the energy efficiency of heat pumps. It replaces the Coefficient of Performance (COP), which measured the ratio of power consumed to power produced in the heating mode on a single operating point. Unlike its predecessor, the SCOP is representative of operation during the heating season as it includes seasonal variations by defining several realistic measurement points. Together, these contribute to classification in the correct energy efficiency class.
New Ecodesign European regulation for process chillers
The regulation EU/2015/1095 is setting Ecodesign requirements for professional refrigerated storage cabinets, blast cabinets, condensing units and process chillers. According to this new regulation, process chillers are appliances capable to provide cooling to a refrigerated appliance or system, the purpose of which is not to provide cooling of a space for the thermal comfort of people.
Seasonal energy performance ratio (SERP)
The SEPR is the ratio between the annual cooling demand and the annual energy consumption of the chiller. The SEPR is expressed in final energy kWh/kWh. The annual cooling demand and the annual energy consumption are calculated from 58 temperature bins corresponding to a reference average climate with ambient temperature ranging from -19° C to +38°C. The calculation is weighted by the number of hours occurring at each temperature bin. (Climate data). The thermal load varies from 80 to 100% for each temperature bin between 5 and 35°C. Below 5° the EER remains constant as well as above 35°C. The SEPR takes into account relativity low load variations, therefore it is significantly driven by the energy efficiency at full load.
A few more information
The standard rating condition for the evaporator is inlet -2°C and outlet -8°C. However, the inlet temperature can be lower if the chiller cannot operate at 6 K delta T.
Process chillers are intended to operate all year round so the SEPR calculation doesn’t take into account the power input in Stand-By or OFF modes.
SEPR is always calculated at a fixed evaporator outlet temperature.
Technical standard EN14825 is under revision to include SEPR calculation.
“Transitional measurement & calculation methods” are available until the publication of a revised standard in 2017.
Process chillers are split into two sub-categories:
“Low temperature” process chillers capable to operate at an evaporator outlet temperature of -25°C.
“Medium temperature” process chillers capable to operate at an evaporator outlet temperature of -8°C
From 1 July 2016 (Tier 1) and 1 July 2018 (Tier 2) the Seasonal Energy Performance Ratio (SEPR) for new chillers placed on the market shall not fall below the following values.
The efficiency requirements are lowered by 10% for process chillers operating with a refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 150, eg: pure R-1234ze, ammonia, hydro-carbons. All Carrier chillers with brine N° 6 or 6B are subject to Ecodesign regulation N° 2015/1095. The units below are compliant with the efficiency requirements applicable from July 1st 2016 as following: 30RBS039-160 Opt 6B / 30RBSY039-160 Opt 6B / 30RB162-402 Opt 6B / 30RBM / 30RBP / 30WG 020-090 Opt 6B / 30RW 110-300 Opt 6 / 30XW 1154 Opt 6 / 30XWP 512, 562 &1012 Opt 6. From 2018, another regulation is expected to set Ecodesign requirements for “High temperature” process chillers operating at an evaporator outlet temperature of +7°C.
Energy labelling regulation
The aim of the Energy Labelling regulation is to provide end users with easy to understand information on product energy efficiency. In addition, the European Energy Labelling regulation classifies products from G to A, according to their efficiency. This pulls the market towards more energy-efficient products by improving consumer information. Starting September 26, 2015, heat pumps up to 70 kW, as commercial heat pump products, are covered by the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling regulations. Conformity is mandatory for a product to obtain the CE marking. Carrier heat pumps are all in the classes A to A ++ due to their advanced energy efficiency design.
The AquaSnap Greenspeed liquid chiller/heat pump range was designed for commercial applications such as the air conditioning of offices, hotels and large residential houses. They can be used with a wide choice of Carrier terminal fan coil units – cassettes, low, medium and high-pressure satellite units, console units, underceiling units and high-wall units. The units integrate the latest technological innovations:
• Non-ozone depleting refrigerant R410A, DC inverter twin-rotary compressors, low-noise variable speed fans and microprocessor control.
• For added flexibility the AquaSnap Greenspeed units are available with or without hydraulic module integrated into the unit chassis.
• With exceptional energy efficiency values the inverter chillers qualify for local tax reductions and incentive plans in all EU countries.
Heating and cooling performances
The combination of inverter component management allows reaching SCOP up to 3.1 and up to 4.56 for ESEER. Able to deliver hot water up to 60°C, 30RBV/RQV is ranked in the medium temperature (47/55°C) and shows an A+ energy label.
Greenspeed technology
Full inverter management for Compressor, fans and expansion valve. In addition, possibility to complete with variable speed circulator as an option, providing the best efficiency potential of the units in terms of heating and cooling performance and sound power levels.
Acoustic performances
Other benefits of Greenspeed technology is the very good sound level at part load. At 20% of capacity, the sound level for 30RBV/RQV17 goes down to 60 dB(A), which means 11 dB(A) less comparing with full load.
Environmental care
Ecodesign is the European Directive that sets mandatory requirements for Energy related Products (ErP) to improve their energy efficiency. Carrier supports initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of its products. 30RBV/RQV models are compliant with regulation 641/2009 requirement from the Ecodesign Directive 2005/32 CE.

Hydronic module
The hydronic module reduces the installation time. The unit is factory-equipped with the main hydronic components required for the installation: screen filter, water pump, expansion tank and relief valve. The water heat exchanger and the hydronic module are protected against frost down to -20°C, using an electric resistance heater (standard) and pump cycling. However, the use of MPG (Mono Propylene Glycol) can effectively protect the installation even in case of power failure. The hydronic module is integrated into the unit without increasing its dimensions and saves the space normally used for the water pump.
Following installation configuration, 30RBV/RQV can be equipped with 2 different hydronic modules:
– Hydronic module with variable speed circulator. It provides an available pressure up to 80 KPa in nominal water flow. It permits a lower electrical consumption and gives a better accessibility for maintenance.
– Hydronic module with fixed speed pump. Used in case of need of high pressure available. Able to deliver an available pressure up to 150 kPa at nominal water flow, fixed speed pump is ideal for resistant hydraulic circuit.
With or without expansion tank and water filling system, it is more 9 configuration possible per size.
Easy and fast installation

The unit is runs until 75% (configurable parameter) and if setting point is not reached, the second unit receives an order to run too…and so forth up to the fourth. Otherwise, the master starts at fist following with slaves, in order with the configuration. Master slave in parallel: Master checks the hours operating for each unit and sends the order to run for all units. Units operate together as the same level. With this mode, The SCOP is optimized. Input remote contact: Remote On/Off, Heat/Cool, Economic Operation, Safety Input Contacts.
Large choice of Input Contacts
Several functions can be configured by the installer. They allow to adapt to the environment of the machine like: / Power Limitation / Night Mode / Off Peak Operation / Loadshed Request / Solar Input / DHW Priority / Anti-Legionella Cycle Request / Summer Switch / Energy Meter Input / External Alarm Indication Input In order to provide answers for several applications, the new control integrates many functions in the standard software. Domestic hot water production, master slave operating, occupancy modes are the main examples.
